What Happens to My Garbage?

After Trash Day

The answer to the question of "what happens to my garbage?” depends on several things.

If you live within the limits of one of the municipalities (cities) in Blue Earth County, your garbage is picked up by a hauler who has a contract with the city to provide disposal service. Municipalities and other public organizations are required to send your garbage through the Resource Recovery portion of the Integrated Waste Management System, where it is processed into fuel and burned to produce electricity.

If you do not live within the limits of a municipality, you must either contract with a licensed solid waste hauler for your own waste disposal service or haul your own waste to a permitted disposal facility. If you contract with a hauler for disposal, the hauler will choose the location of the disposal of your waste. It may or may not be through the Integrated Waste Management System.
